When he brings home an old tv...
So, in comes Greg with this 'monster' television that doesn't work. 'I got it on Craigs List, it was a great deal!!' He was so excited to show me..and all I can say is...'uhhhhhhh?' For the life of me I can't fathom what he is going to do with it, but hey- I roll with it. He's a little crazy and I GET that!
So what follows is a conversion that can only be described in pictures...First thing Greg did was gut the tv cabinet. Now, without being too descriptive, lets just say- BE CAREFUL if you plan on doing this..check you-tube (or the internet or your local tv repair man for instructions on how to remove a picture tube! ) nuff said- no one got hurt! ;)
He was careful about removing the knobs and safety glass, as he wanted to reuse them. That glass was CRAZY thick! And the cabinet was so deep that Greg decided to trim it down to a manageable piece of furniture using the jigsaw.
So now it's been gutted and trimmed down. I am still shaking my head, wondering what is next. We painted the cabinet and polished knobs and trim. It looks beautiful...but I still don't get it...I'm not seeing the vision. A lot of what he did next unfortunately wasn't recorded with the camera. A piece of MDF was cut to the exact shape of the opening inside the tv trim. Greg then airbrushed (painted) the 'I Love Lucy' opening title on the mdf (while I slept, if I remember correctly) Next day it was time to insert said panel, reconstruct the knobs, and secure the back panel to the tv. Tapered legs were purchased at our local home improvement store and painted to match the TV cabinet. The rabbit ears/converter lamp was placed on the top, and VIOLA!, we have what looks like an old television that appears to be broadcasting I love Lucy! I have nicknamed her Lucy...and Lucy has a prominent place in our mid-century living room. 'She' is one of our favorite pieces...and I am so glad that Greg saw the potential in that old tv.
By the way, I still think he's a little crazy ;)
